Working Parties

We hope you all have had a great summer. The ski club has two working bee’s or work parties where we really need your help please. We have quite a few small jobs to do, and as we all know many hands make light work!

With a good turn out there will be plenty of time to explore the mountain if you wish, or just to sit and relax outside the hut in the sun with a refreshing drink!

Being on the mountain, in our world heritage national park at this time of year is very special. You get to see some incredible ancient lava flows and rock formations that you otherwise would never experience.  This is because (touch wood) there will be thousands of tonnes of snow covering them next time you are here!

As always, the added incentive, if you attend a work party you will get preferential access to bookings. We will open the bookings early for you to secure key dates in school holidays, labour weekend or for other weekends throughout the season!

The club will look after your accommodation, food and provide a few cold refreshments, you just need to turn up!  All the maintenance materials and equipment will be provided.

What to bring

If you have not attended a work party before you will need, good sturdy footwear, such tramping boots (or similar) to walk up to the hut. The walk up takes around 40-60 minutes depending on fitness levels. Work gloves, the material gloves with light rubberised palms are best, especially for those of us with office hands (Mitre 10 sells them).  Clear safety glasses are useful, and old work clothes.  A back pack and a sleeping bag or sheets if you are staying over and some snacks.

If you can attend please use the buttons below (or send us an email at committee@wssc.co.nz) as to which working party you will join.

Saturday 20th & Sunday 21st February

The first working bee is on Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21th February.  This working bee will cover general hut maintenance such as cleaning, painting and stacking fire wood from under the hut and in the wood room.  We need around 10-15 people.  We will be painting, cleaning out the hut, washing and cleaning to top to bottom. If you can only attend one day that is fine.  We meet at 9am the Top of Bruce then walk up the hill from there, or you could make your way up to the ski clubThe first working bee will be led by Dave Lazelle (text or phone 027 4499756), Dave Taylor and Phil Brown.

Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th March

The second working party is to deliver our stores and to finish any general maintenance not completed on the first weekend.  We will have all the non-perishable food stores coming up. We need around 15 to 20 people to help.  We will be taking a couple of 4×4 vehicles up with the new dishwasher/ steriliser and all the stores and removing old construction materials.  One team will load these stores then walk up. We will be painting and finishing off works from the previous weekend.  It would be good to have everyone else at the ski club by 10am to unload and form a chain to get the stores into the hut. Bill Nichol and Gordy Horsley (text or phone 027 4316348) will lead this work party.

Thanks to you all in advance. If you have any questions or need more information please call Gordy Horsley, Club President on 0274316348.
